I am sure that many of you have heard about the outcome of the election, especially if you are reading this blog because you have some political inclination. If you don’t let me lay it out for you, yes Donald Trump is the presumptive President Elect(the electoral college has not been convened yet and there for it is not final), yes the Republicans kept the majority in the Senate with 51 seats and 2 spots still undetermined, yes the Republicans also kept the majority in the House with 238 seats and 4 still undetermined. Now this is strange to have the one party have a majority in both houses of Congress, during a presidential election cycle where that same party president was elected, but believe it or not, President Obama also did the same thing in 2008. The last time this happened with a Republican Candidate was the election of 1952 when Dwight D. Eisenhower was elected President for the first time.
Now what is going to be done in the first 2 years of the presidency of Donald Trump, well here is what I think. I believe that he is going to work with Paul Ryan to formulate a plan to do what both ideologies want. While the first thing they will definitely look at will be “Obamacare”. From what I have been hearing and reading, Trump and Congress understand they cannot just get rid of it, without putting something else in place, and I believe they will put something that spends less money and is more reliant on private health insurance. I also believe that Trump will look at our trade deals that we currently have around the world, and evaluate them. He will look for either where we are letting something slide under the rug, or ways to get out of “bad deals”. He has expressed this throughout the entire campaign. Obviously some immigration reform with take place, and I believe there will be a push to deport “Criminal” illegal immigrants back to which ever country they are a citizen of. Criminal is not meaning illegal immigrants here that are just living, it means an illegal immigrant that has done a crime in America, other than coming into this country illegally. While many people were calling him anti-immigrant, they missed that he actually wants to help illegal immigrants that want to be here and live peacefully a way to do so permanently. There could be some sort of wall, I am unsure if the first 2 years is where he will get it will be, but we will see. He also can obviously send Supreme Court appointees to the Senate, where there is that slight majority.
The Supreme Court appointees is where we the people can actually make a difference. You would have to lobby your Senator to vote a way you would want to and not just because a Republican President appointed them. Us as the people need to make sure that the constitution is upheld, every single part of it, and that is why we should take place in lobbying for the Supreme Court confirmations. Don’t give up and get made because something didn’t go your way, you move on and start working for a better tomorrow.
